“The US military conducted separate, precision strikes against two facilities in Iraq,” US Central Command said. “The strikes were in direct response to attacks against US forces by Iranian-backed groups.”

The Kataeb Hezbollah Brigades said the strikes killed eight of their fighters. Hours earlier, a warplane struck a facility run by the militant group after it fired a short-range ballistic missile at US and allied personnel, the Pentagon said.

The move was condemned by the Iraqi government, which said it had not been consulted about US military action on its soil.

This is the first time the US has announced an attack on Iran-backed forces in Iraq since the conflict erupted in Gaza. The US has previously targeted rebel forces in Syria.

Since the conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted on October 7, US forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 66 times, most recently on Monday night, according to Pentagon officials.
