Russian security services launched a counterintelligence operation in the country-controlled Zaporizhzhia region, taking down a suspected Ukrainian spy.
"During a special operation on the territory of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) prevented the activities of three large spy groups coordinated by Ukrainian intelligence," the FSB said in a statement on October 27.
The FSB said it had arrested the heads of a news site and a Telegram channel on charges of "collaborating with foreign intelligence to gather information and psychologically influence people in the region", despite the people using measures to hide their identities on the Internet.

"One of the agents of the Main Directorate of Military Intelligence of Ukraine (GUR) used a weapon to fight back and was killed. When searching his house, security personnel discovered an improvised explosive device, an AKMS assault rifle and an RGN grenade," the FSB announced.
According to the FSB, the detainees "incited local residents to collect and send information" on the location, movements of troops and equipment, and other data about the Russian armed forces, "to the detriment of national security." During interrogation, the detainees admitted to working for Ukrainian intelligence.
The FSB has recently arrested several people suspected of collaborating with Ukrainian intelligence, as well as foiled several sabotage operations in Russia. On October 26, the FSB announced that it had shot down a man who had plotted to bomb a military recruitment office in Tver province.
