Earlier, on March 22, the Russian Defense Ministry reported a large-scale strike with long-range precision weapons and drones on energy facilities, military-industrial complexes, railway centers, weapons depots and deployment sites of the Ukrainian army. According to the ministry, "all the goals of the massive strike were achieved."

In connection with the incident, the Ukrainian military said Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on Friday, with a barrage of 99 drones and missiles hitting areas across Ukraine.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said air strike warnings had been sounded across the country, with 10 regions of Ukraine under attack.

Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine in recent days, launching several missile barrages at the capital Kiev and attacking energy infrastructure across the country, in retaliation for recent Ukrainian air strikes on Russia's Belgorod border region.

In the latest development, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Belgorod was under further attack on Friday. It said it had shot down 15 Ukrainian shells, with falling fragments damaging several residential buildings. No casualties were reported.

The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, later said on social media that a man had died as a result of a separate drone attack on an apartment complex.

Meanwhile in Ukraine, a massive power outage has hit the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, where 700,000 people were left without power after the city's thermal power plant was attacked with drones and missiles on March 22.

In a statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine's Kaniv and Dniester hydroelectric power plants had also been attacked. He warned that other countries would be threatened if the dams were breached. The Dniester hydroelectric power station, located near the city of Novodnistrovsk, Ukraine, is about 15 kilometers from the border with Moldova.

DTEK, Ukraine's largest private electricity operator, also said three of its thermal power plants were damaged in the attacks. It declared an emergency power cut in the city of Odesa, leaving some neighborhoods without electricity.
