On November 3, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Syrian President Bashar Assad is not ready to normalize relations with the opposition in the country and, in a broader sense, with Ankara.

In an interview with the daily Hürriyet , Foreign Minister Fidan said: "In the current context of deconfliction, Turkey hopes to see the Syrian government and the opposition create a political framework that both sides can accept."

According to the head of the Turkish foreign ministry, it is "very important for the government to provide a safe and stable environment for the people, including the opposition".

Foreign Minister Fidan's remarks come after a recent statement by his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov about Moscow's readiness to resume its role as a mediator between Türkiye and Syria.

The Turkish diplomat stressed that the Syrian government should first negotiate with opposition groups to reach an agreement, but he commented: "As we understand, Mr. Assad and his partners are not ready to seek an agreement with the opposition and aim for a broader normalization."

Fidan noted that Israel's continued attacks on Syria and terrorist organizations in the Middle Eastern country could try to take advantage of the growing chaos to grow and could plunge Syria into "deeper instability."

Türkiye and Syria launched direct talks at the ministerial level in 2023, but the process failed after Damascus imposed a precondition that Ankara withdraw its troops from its neighbor's territory.
