Chhay-Dam drum performance art becomes national intangible heritage

On the evening of June 27, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of An Giang coordinated with the People's Committee of Tinh Bien Town to organize a ceremony to announce the decision of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism to list the Chhay-Dam drum performance art of the Khmer people in Tri Ton District and Tinh Bien Town (An Giang Province) as a National Intangible Heritage.

Leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of An Giang province gave congratulatory speeches to the localities and Khmer people.

The art of Chhay-Dam drum performance is a long-standing traditional cultural art form of the Khmer community in An Giang , associated with traditional festivals to pray for peace and good crops; expressing gratitude to nature, ancestors and gods, imbued with the distinct cultural identity of the Khmer people.

With those typical values, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of An Giang has coordinated with the People's Committee of Tri Ton district, the People's Committee of Tinh Bien town and the consulting unit of Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture to establish a scientific dossier "The art of Chhay-Dam drum performance of the Khmer people in Tri Ton district and Tinh Bien town, An Giang province".

On January 22, 2025, the People's Committee of An Giang province issued Document 47/TTr-UBND to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, proposing to include "The art of Chhay-Dam drum performance of the Khmer people in Tri Ton district and Tinh Bien town, An Giang province" in the List of national intangible cultural heritage.

On May 14, 2025, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision 1350/QD-BVHTTDL on the announcement of the inclusion of "The art of Chhay-Dam drum performance of the Khmer people in Tri Ton district and Tinh Bien town, An Giang province" in the List of national intangible cultural heritage.

This is the 9th national intangible heritage of An Giang province, along with the Via Ba Chua Xu Festival of Sam Mountain; Ky Yen Festival of Thoai Ngoc Hau communal house; Bay Nui bull racing festival; knowledge and techniques of writing on palm leaves of Khmer ethnic minorities; Di Ke stage performance art of Khmer ethnic minorities in O Lam commune (Tri Ton district); life cycle rituals of Cham Islam ethnic minorities in An Phu district and Tan Chau town; brocade weaving of Cham ethnic minorities in Chau Phong commune (Tan Chau town); palm sugar making of Khmer ethnic minorities in Tri Ton district and Tinh Bien town.
