Women's tears can reduce male aggression
Previous research has found that male mice become less aggressive when they smell female tears. To see if tears have the same effect on humans, the researchers conducted an experiment in which men were exposed to emotional female tears in an anger-inducing situation.
Participants played a game designed to arouse aggression against opponents who had cheated and lost them money. While playing, participants were divided into two groups, one group smelled women's tears and the control group smelled salt water. None of them knew they were smelling these substances.
The results found that the group that smelled women's tears had a 40% reduction in aggressiveness seeking revenge against cheating opponents in the game, according to Hindustan Times.
The MRI scans also showed that two brain regions involved in aggression - the prefrontal cortex and the anterior insula, which became stronger when provoked in the game, were "weakened" when the men smelled women's tears, according to Hindustan Times.
