The party took place in Jamnagar, a city of about 600,000 people in the near-desert region of Gujarat state. It is the hometown of Mukesh Ambani’s family and the site of the main refinery of their business empire, Reliance Industries.

Although the wedding has already begun, Anant Ambani, 28, will only officially marry his longtime girlfriend Radhika Merchant in July. Merchant is also a wealthy young lady. She is the daughter of Viren Merchant, CEO of Encore Healthcare, and entrepreneur Shaila Merchant.

Forbes lists Mukesh Ambani as Asia's richest man. His Reliance Industries is a sprawling conglomerate, with annual revenues of $100 billion across a range of businesses: from oil and gas to telecommunications to retail.

Mukesh Ambani, 66, has begun handing over the leadership reins to his sons and daughters. Eldest son Akash is now chairman of Reliance Jio; daughter Isha oversees retail; and younger son Anant has been introduced to the new energy business.

The guest list also includes Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Jassim al Thani, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper as well as the King and Queen of Bhutan.
