At the coronation ceremony, Ms. Paki was anointed with holy oil and blessed with a Bible. According to The Guardian, Ms. Paki is the second female leader of the indigenous Maori community. Ms. Paki succeeds her father, Tuheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero, who died at the age of 69 on August 30.

The Maori queen is not automatically elected, but is elected by the Kiingitanga, a group of 12 elders from different Maori tribes. This practice dates back to 1858 to protect the land and culture of the indigenous Maori people against foreign invasion.
