A new Guess ad campaign in Vogue uses AI-generated models, marking the first time this type of content has appeared in the magazine's history. The virtual model image is captioned very small as “Produced by Seraphinne Vallora on AI,” which many readers initially missed.
The event sparked controversy over the potential for AI to replace models, photographers, and even backstage crews in the fashion industry. Seraphinne Vallora, the company that created the series of images, calls it a “real job” and says AI is a new creative tool, not unlike Photoshop.
However, their website lists the advantage of AI as “eliminating the cost of models, photographers, sets, and makeup.” Guess has yet to post images of the AI models on official media channels, while their Instagram is being "attacked" by netizens. Many people are concerned that the unreal, unrealistic images of virtual models will put pressure on appearance and create toxic beauty standards for young people.
Although still in its infancy, the trend of using AI models as “digital twins” is spreading and raising big questions about ethics and the future of the fashion industry.
