On September 2, the Department of Health of Ha Giang province announced that the diphtheria epidemic in Meo Vac district ( Ha Giang ) is showing signs of complicated developments. To date, the locality has recorded 32 suspected cases of diphtheria, including 2 deaths.

Faced with the complicated developments of the diphtheria epidemic, the Ha Giang Provincial Department of Health has requested that upper-level hospitals, such as the National Children's Hospital, Bach Mai Hospital, and the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases, be ready to send staff to provide professional and technical support for treating cases, especially severe cases. Ha Giang is also lacking vaccines to carry out the vaccination campaign, and does not have diphtheria antitoxin serum.
Diphtheria is an acute infectious disease that is spread through direct contact from an infected person to a healthy person through the respiratory tract, or indirectly through contact with toys or objects contaminated with secretions of a person infected with diphtheria bacteria. Because diphtheria bacteria are transmitted mainly through the respiratory tract, the rate of spread is very fast.
