On November 10, a Boeing 787 of Hainan Airlines, China, carrying 249 passengers and 16 crew members, had an engine fire shortly after taking off from Fiumicino Airport (Rome, Italy).

The flight was scheduled to be headed to Shenzhen, China. Footage captured the horrifying moment the plane was flying in the sky when an orange spark suddenly appeared on one side of the engine. Within seconds, flames were erupting from the right engine as the plane continued to fly.

According to the Italian Coast Guard, the initial cause is believed to be a collision with a bird. The crew quickly dealt with the situation by turning the plane around and dumping fuel into the sea before landing safely at Fiumicino Airport. An Italian airport official confirmed that the incident did not cause any delays for other flights at Fiumicino.

Bird strikes are common.

Bird strikes are common incidents in the aviation industry.

Bird strikes are common in aviation and rarely result in serious consequences.

The incident is reminiscent of several similar incidents involving Boeing aircraft in recent times. On November 5, a Boeing 737-500 en route to Wamena caught fire at Sentani Airport in Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia, forcing the evacuation of 121 passengers. Horrifying footage showed smoke billowing from the plane's engine. Another clip showed panicked passengers standing on the wings of the plane waiting to escape via emergency slides amid screams and sirens. One passenger reportedly noticed the fire and panicked and opened the emergency exit, shouting the alarm to others. The flight was canceled and two other flights were delayed due to the incident.

Previously, in June, an Air Canada Boeing plane also caught fire just seconds after taking off from Pearson Airport (Toronto, Canada) en route to Paris (France).
