Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stated that after nearly 20 years (2004-2023) of implementing Decision 178, Phu Quoc has developed remarkably and strongly and become a leading tourist destination for domestic and foreign visitors.
Re-identifying Phu Quoc's potential
According to the Prime Minister , Phu Quoc now has more, including: Phu Quoc currently has more enhanced potential, more synchronously developed strategic infrastructure; the role, prestige and position of Phu Quoc are also higher than other places.
Phu Quoc has more favorable opportunities. However, along with that, Phu Quoc still has many difficulties and challenges and has not developed to its full potential.
Phu Quoc is developing rapidly, with many unsustainable factors, including: no proper waste treatment plant, waste collection and treatment; no wastewater treatment plant.
Phu Quoc has great potential, but its policy mechanism is limited; the environment and human resources still have many challenges. Land management and purchase and sale documents are often handwritten by the people.
"Phu Quoc needs to evaluate and correctly identify its unique potential, competitive opportunities, and opportunities for development. Promote self-reliance, develop with your hands and brains, and Phu Quoc needs to have the mindset of turning nothing into something, turning difficult into easy, and turning the impossible into possible. Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee said that in nearly 20 years (2004-2023), Phu Quoc has transformed from a deserted island into an attractive sea and island tourist destination for domestic and foreign tourists. Tourism revenue in 2023 reached 6,848 billion VND. Total social capital investment in basic construction in 2023 is about 21,615 billion VND (in 2004 it was only about 310 billion VND).
In 2023, Phu Quoc's budget revenue will reach VND7,812 billion. To date, the locality has more than 320 projects of investors with a total capital of about USD20 billion.
Phu Quoc is currently developing strongly, but there are still some limitations such as: trading goods depends on sea and air routes, which takes a lot of time, costs transportation and is easily isolated in bad weather.
Medical and educational infrastructure only meets the needs of the islanders; investment capital for technical infrastructure has not met the demand.
In particular, state management in the field of land management in Phu Quoc still has shortcomings; a number of officials have committed violations in land management and local construction order.
"Phu Quoc needs more specific mechanisms to develop synchronously in the fields of tourism, health, education, environment, and urban areas. The locality hopes that the People's Committee of Kien Giang province will propose proposals on the apparatus and human resources to better perform the work, meeting the development needs of Phu Quoc in the coming time," Mr. Huynh Quang Hung - Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City - proposed.
To develop Phu Quoc, Mr. Do Thanh Binh - Secretary of Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee - said that Kien Giang proposed to prioritize state budget capital to invest in developing infrastructure for water supply, waste treatment, traffic infrastructure... with a total demand of about 42,000 billion VND.
The locality proposed that the Government assign the Ministry of Planning and Investment to coordinate with Kien Giang province to update and supplement the review report, propose specific mechanisms and policies on the development of the Mekong Delta region to advise the Government to submit to the National Assembly to issue common specific mechanisms and policies for the region, including Phu Quoc City.
6 things to promote to develop Phu Quoc
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized: It is necessary to promote the improvement of institutions and policies for Phu Quoc development.
Promote the synchronous development of Phu Quoc infrastructure, including: transport infrastructure, society, health, education, information technology, climate change response, and environmental protection.
Promote decentralization for Phu Quoc; strengthen inspection and control mechanisms against corruption.
Promote production and business, create jobs and livelihoods for people.
Promote the exploitation of historical traditions, culture, identity, and heroism associated with the development of tourism services.
Promote support from ministries, branches and localities for Phu Quoc to develop according to goals to meet people's expectations.
