Topping the list is banh dau mung – a traditional dessert originating in Hai Duong , made from a combination of mung beans, vegetable oil or lard, sugar and flavourings to create a cake with a soft and smooth, candy-like consistency. It is believed that the cake first appeared in the 1920s, and since then, the simple combination has become a local favourite and has become popular across the country.

Traditionally, mung bean cakes should be eaten with a cup of green tea or lotus tea.

The second place is blood pudding, made from fresh animal blood mixed with fish sauce and some other ingredients, then allowed to coagulate like pudding. The surface will be decorated with peanuts and herbs…

Blood pudding always appears in the rankings of the worst dishes in Vietnam.

This dish is traditionally prepared on special occasions and has always caused controversy even in Vietnam, mainly due to the risk of ingesting bacteria in raw blood, but it remains popular.

In addition, the list also includes many very popular dishes in Vietnam that have been criticized by TasteAtlas readers such as: banh troi, thit jelly, bun dau mam tom, bun mam, chao long, che chuoi, xoi gac, banh chung, nem chua, com ron, dua hanh, banh da lon, banh gio..., even banh chung and banh tet.

TasteAtlas claims that the results are based on reader ratings, with a series of mechanisms to identify real users and ignore fake ratings... For the list of 45 worst-rated Vietnamese dishes as of March 16, 2024, 4,427 ratings were recorded, of which 3,037 ratings were legally recognized by the system. "The TasteAtlas rankings should not be considered the final global conclusion about food," the site emphasized.

Bun Dau Mam Tom is also on the list.

Last year, Thais reacted strongly when one of their beloved traditional dishes, Kaeng Som, was ranked 12th on TasteAtlas' list of the world's 100 worst foods.

On the Bangkok Post , many people claim that Kaeng Som is a home-cooked dish that is even better than the globally famous tom yum kung and pad Thai.
