Gas tank explosion at Czech restaurant, 14 casualties

(CLO) A serious explosion at the Kojot restaurant in the city of Most, northwestern Czech Republic, killed 6 people and injured 8 others, according to rescue services on January 12.


The incident occurred at 22:17 (GMT) on January 11 when a gas cylinder exploded, leading to a fierce fire that spread quickly in the restaurant area. The fire was brought under control by the fire department at midnight.

According to initial reports, the cause may have been a gas fireplace that fell over in the restaurant's front garden, causing the catastrophic explosion. "The fire spread extremely quickly after a gas fireplace may have fallen over," the local fire department posted on X.

Twelve fire crews responded to the scene and rescued a critically injured customer trapped in the bathroom. About 30 people, including restaurant guests and residents from surrounding buildings, were evacuated.

Interior Minister Vit Rakusan confirmed that of the eight injured, six were seriously injured and were transferred to hospitals in Prague, Most and Usti nad Labem for treatment.

The incident occurred in a residential area about 70 km northwest of Prague, near the border with Germany. At the time of the explosion, there were about 20 diners in the restaurant.

This is one of the most serious explosions in the area in recent years, leaving serious consequences and shocking local public opinion.
