Last-ditch effort pays off, Venezuela becomes member of IAEA Board of Governors

On September 19, Venezuela and 10 other countries were elected to the 35-member Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2024-2026 term.

The announcement posted on the IAEA's official website stated that the election took place at the plenary session of the 68th IAEA General Conference at the agency's headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

The newly elected members of the Board of Governors are: Argentina, Colombia, Egypt, Italy, Luxembourg, Georgia, Ghana, Morocco, Pakistan, Thailand and Venezuela.

For the 2024-2025 period, the new composition of the IAEA Board of Governors will include 35 members: Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Luxembourg, Morocco, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Pakistan, Paraguay, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America and Venezuela.

The Board of Governors is one of the IAEA's two policy-making bodies, along with the annual General Conference of IAEA Member States. The Board will meet on Monday, September 23.

Posting information after Venezuela was elected, on the Telegram page, the country's Foreign Minister Yvan Gil emphasized Caracas' commitment to promoting the use of nuclear technology and energy for peace and development.

Venezuela's Foreign Ministry also issued a statement saying that the country has been a candidate for the above position since 2022 and Caracas has made efforts to win one of the three regional representative seats on the IAEA Board of Governors.

In addition to Venezuela, Argentina and Colombia also represent Latin America and the Caribbean during this term.
