The New York Times on February 22 cited internal emails posted online showing that the US Secret Service had to "adjust its operational tactics" in protecting President Joe Biden, because his family's pet dog kept attacking agency personnel.
The agency recorded 24 attacks by Commander, a German shepherd, on staff between October 2022 and July 2023, including one that required six stitches and another that left the White House floor bleeding.
Commander was considered a terror by the Secret Service in the West Wing at the White House, Camp David and Biden’s home in Delaware. About half of all dog bites by Secret Service agents required medical attention. In early October 2023, US media reported that Commander was taken from the White House to an undisclosed location. At that time, the dog was 2 years old.
"Recent dog bites have forced us to adjust our operational tactics when Commander is present, please leave plenty of space," according to an internal Secret Service email.
Accordingly, the Secret Service will continue to protect the president but must be creative to ensure personal safety, while "finding a better solution soon".

The documents were released in a Freedom of Information Act request by John Greenewald, a California-based researcher who specializes in exposing US government secrets, from UFOs to the CIA and military operations.
The US Secret Service confirmed that the above documents are true. The 24 cases of dog bites only include Secret Service agents, not other employees and forces serving the president.
