Yonhap news agency quoted the announcement of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on October 15 saying that at noon the same day, North Korea blew up "several sections on Gyeongui and Donghae roads north of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL)".

The JCS said the South Korean military fired warning shots south of the MDL in response to North Korea's move, while also strengthening surveillance and combat readiness.

Earlier, on October 9, the North Korean military said it would "permanently close and block the southern border" with South Korea by cutting off all roads and railways connecting the two countries, as well as building frontline defense works.

The measure would "completely separate" North Korean territory from South Korea.

The above development is the latest in the context of increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula in recent days.

Most recently, North Korea threatened military action against South Korea, stemming from accusations that Seoul had sent drones to drop anti-North Korean leaflets in Pyongyang.

On October 13, North Korea announced that it had ordered artillery units near the border with South Korea to be ready to fire and stressed that if drones carrying anti-Pyongyang documents continued to intrude into its territory, it would be a "declaration of war."

South Korea has denied the allegations, with domestic speculation focusing on activist groups in the South, which have long dropped leaflets and US currency into the North, often by balloon.

However, Seoul also announced that it is "closely monitoring the situation and is ready to respond to North Korea's actions."
