On the afternoon of October 9 (Hanoi time), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics went to Professor Claudia Goldin (USA) for her research that has improved the world's understanding of the impact of women on the labor market.

The award concluded Christmas Week 2023. Professor Claudia Goldin is the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economics in the 55-year history of the award.

Last year, the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to three economists, Ben S. Bernanke of the Brookings Institution (USA), Douglas W. Diamond of the University of Chicago (USA) and Philip H. Dybvig of the University of Washington (USA) for their research on banking and financial crises.

Professor Claudia Goldin's research draws on 200 years of data from the United States, allowing her to demonstrate how and why men and women's earnings and employment have changed over time.

She demonstrated that female participation in the labor market did not tend to increase over this period, but instead followed a U-shaped pattern.

Professor Claudia Goldin currently works at Harvard University (USA), is an expert in labor history and economics. She is also the author of many books and is famous for her work on the history of women in the US economy.

Between 1969 and 2022, 54 Nobel Prizes in Economics have been awarded to 92 individuals. The youngest person ever to win the prestigious award was Esther Duflo (46 years old), while the oldest person ever to be honored was economist Leonid Hurwicz (90 years old).
