Despite some controversy, Ms. Hasina is still trusted by her people for helping Bangladesh achieve rapid economic growth in a country once beset by poverty.

Official results will not be announced until late Monday, but Election Commission officials said the coalition led by her Awami League party won about three-quarters of the seats in Bangladesh's parliament , or about 220 of the 300 seats.
Ms Hasina, 76, urged people to show faith in the democratic process. “I am trying my best to ensure that democracy continues in this country,” she told reporters after casting her vote.
Ms. Hasina was first elected as Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001. She was then re-elected in 2029 and has led this country of 170 million people for three consecutive terms since then.
Prime Minister Hasina was ranked 26th in Forbes magazine's list of "World's Most Powerful Women" in 2018. She was also included in Foreign Policy's "Top 100 Global Thinkers" of the current decade.
