President Biden speaks at the White House on November 7
CNN on the evening of November 7 quoted US President Joe Biden's statement declaring that he would ensure a smooth transfer of power to President-elect Donald Trump.
“Yesterday, I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory, and I assured him that I am directing my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. That is what the American people deserve,” President Biden said.
“For over 200 years, America has conducted the greatest experiment in self-government in the history of the world . That’s not hyperbole. That’s the truth. Where the people vote and choose their own leaders, and they do it peacefully. We are in a democracy, the will of the people always prevails,” he continued in the Rose Garden at the White House, in front of a large crowd of reporters.
Regarding the electoral system, Mr. Biden hopes that Mr. Trump's re-election will help dispel doubts about the fairness of the US election.
“One thing we can hopefully do, regardless of who you voted for, is see each other not as opponents, but as fellow Americans. Let’s cool things down. I also hope we can address the question of the integrity of the American electoral system. It’s honest, it’s fair, it’s transparent, it can be trusted, win or lose,” he said.
Regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s White House bid, Biden praised the Democratic candidate’s character. “She has great character, real character. She’s dedicated and driven, and she and her entire team should be proud of the campaign they ran,” he said.
“Failure is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable,” he said, adding that “failure does not mean we have been defeated.”
Regarding the White House's recent performance, he predicted that some of the effects of his tenure may only be seen a decade from now.
The president said more than $1 trillion in infrastructure work had been done under his administration, which would transform the lives of people in rural communities and communities that are “really struggling.”
He called on Americans to unite, stressing that people needed to “love their neighbors” even during times of political tension. “I’ve said it many times, you can’t just be patriotic when you win,” he stressed.
The leader continued to reassure that America would be fine, despite the election results and political divisions.
“Above all, we need to keep the faith. It has been an honor to work with all of you. I mean it. I mean it. God bless you all,” President Biden said at the end of his speech.
Earlier, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told troops that the Pentagon “will conduct a calm, orderly, and professional transition of power to the incoming Trump administration.”
In a message to troops on November 6, Mr. Austin wrote that “as always, the US military will be ready to implement the policy choices of the next commander in chief and comply with all lawful orders from our civilian chain of command.”
He said the US military would “separate” from politics and continue to support and protect the constitution, according to CNN.
