US President Joe Biden says he could have won if he had run again in the 2024 presidential race.

In an interview with USA Today on January 8, when asked if he believed he could beat Donald Trump in the November 2024 election, President Biden replied: "Yes, I think so."

"I really think I'm the one who has the best chance of beating him. But I also don't want to be president when I'm 85, 86. So I'm passing the torch," President Biden added. Asked by USA Today if he was confident of serving another four years, Biden replied: "I don't know."

In announcing his decision to withdraw, Mr. Biden said: "While I intend to run for re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of the Democratic Party and the country to step down and focus on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term."

Before Mr Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race in July, several polls showed the incumbent president had a lower or equal chance of winning than Mr Trump.

In addition, President Biden has faced many doubts about his health during his run for the White House. He withdrew and gave the opportunity to run for the US Vice President Kamala Harris in July 2024 after a debate performance that was considered not good against Mr. Trump.

"My unique advantage is that I've known every major world leader for a long time," President Biden said. "I have a personal understanding of each of them and their interests. And so I think that has helped me lead some of the fundamental changes that are taking place, whether it's in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East or the Far East."

According to AFP, referring to his legacy, Mr. Biden said he wanted to be remembered for his efforts to restore the post-pandemic economy and re-establish America's global leadership position. "That's my expectation. I hope history will record that I did it honestly and with integrity, that I said what I thought," he said.
