In a letter to the Japanese Prime Minister , President Trump announced that starting August 1, the US will apply a tariff of "only" 25% on any goods it exports to the US.
This tax will be separate from the industry-specific tariff and transshipment goods (transhipping - PV) to avoid high tariffs will be taxed at a higher rate.
The US leader then affirmed that "there will be no tariffs" if Japanese companies decide to produce in the US and Washington is committed to creating the fastest, most favorable and professional conditions for this process.
"If for any reason Japan decides to increase the tariff, whatever number you choose to increase will be added to the 25% that we have already calculated," Mr. Trump warned.
The letter to the President of South Korea also has similar content. In the two letters, Mr. Trump argued that the 25% tariff is to ensure fair trade and address the trade deficit between the US and these countries.
South Korea and Japan are two of Asia's leading economies and are also treaty allies of the United States.
“Please understand that 25% is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit we have with your country,” President Trump said in both letters.

Mr. Trump had previously warned that he would send more letters to the leaders of the countries before the deadline of 00:01 a.m. on July 9 (Eastern time), to pressure them to make concessions and accept the deal, or face higher tariffs.
In April, he announced that he would impose reciprocal tariffs on goods from hundreds of economies, but then delayed them for 90 days to allow for negotiations. At that time, Japan was threatened with a 24% tariff, while South Korea was threatened with a 25% tariff.
Now, the tariffs Mr. Trump imposed on Japan and South Korea are equal to or higher than the levels announced in April.
US stocks continued to fall after the announcement. The Dow lost 530 points (1.2%), the S&P 500 fell 0.87%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.9%.
The letter concluded by suggesting that if Japan and South Korea open their markets to US goods, eliminate tariffs, non-tariff policies and trade barriers, the US could consider making adjustments.
"This tariff can be adjusted, increased or decreased, depending on the relationship between the United States and your country. You will never be disappointed by the United States," Mr. Trump emphasized.
