US President Donald Trump visited the 'Alcatraz Alligator' prison - an immigrant detention center in the Everglades, Florida (USA).

Speaking at Alcatraz on July 1, President Trump praised the prison's rapid construction progress as he walked around and inspected dozens of empty bunk beds inside the iron cages.

“This facility will soon house some of the most feared, most violent migrants on the planet,” Mr Trump said. “The prison is surrounded by miles of dangerous swampland and the only way out is really deportation.”

Built on an abandoned airport in the Everglades, the immigration detention center is estimated to cost $450 million a year to maintain and can hold about 5,000 people. The surrounding swamps are home to alligators and venomous snakes.

"There is only one road in, and the only way out is a one-way flight. It is isolated and surrounded by dangerous wildlife and rugged terrain. The facility will have up to 5,000 beds to house, process and deport illegal immigrants who have committed crimes," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on June 30.

“This is an efficient and cost-effective way to help carry out the largest mass deportation operation in US history,” Ms. Leavitt added.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he will deploy 100 National Guard troops to the Alcatraz prison. The facility is expected to be operational as early as July 2.

Meanwhile, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier posted on the X platform: "This facility is the only stop for President Trump's mass deportation program. This location saves money on security because there are many dangerous animals around."

To promote the opening of the facility, US officials posted pictures on social media of alligators wearing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement hats. Members of the US Republican Party in Florida also sold alligator-themed clothing and beer pitchers, according to Reuters.

Environmental groups are filing a lawsuit to block the construction of Alcatraz prison, accusing the Trump administration of violating the Endangered Species Act and environmental laws.

Trump dismissed environmental concerns on July 1, saying that wildlife in wetlands would outlive humans. He also said he would like to see Alcatraz-like facilities in other states across the country.
