France's health, safety, environment and labour watchdog (ANSES) has recommended closer monitoring of areas where food giant Nestle extracts mineral water.

France demands monitoring of Nestle mining sites

The move comes after French authorities discovered signs of bacterial contamination in Nestle’s bottled mineral water. According to Le Monde, ANSES also confirmed that it had received reports of microbiological contamination and that it had sent recommendations to the French Ministry of Health in October last year.

The move by ANSES comes as French prosecutors investigate allegations that Nestle used illegal treatment methods in the production of bottled mineral water in the country. In 2007, the French government issued a decree requiring that water at its source and during its sale be free of waste contamination, parasites and disease-causing microorganisms.
