On December 1, Master, Pharmacist Nguyen Huu Tu - Permanent Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Young Physicians Association said that the program series "Live healthy every day - For a healthier Vietnam" will screen for H.Pylori bacteria (one of the main causes of gastric and duodenal ulcers, stomach cancer) and non-communicable diseases in the community for about 11,000 people in 6 provinces and cities.

In the past two weeks, doctors have implemented four programs in four provinces and cities (including Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Da Nang ), examining, screening, providing free medicine and giving gifts to nearly 5,000 people.

Notably, after community screening, doctors discovered 973 cases positive for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). In Vietnam, the rate of H. pylori infection is high, in previous studies in Ho Chi Minh City, it was estimated that about 70% of the adult population is infected with this type of bacteria. Although most people infected with H. pylori do not have obvious symptoms, about 10-20% of them are at risk of developing gastric-duodenal ulcers, and 1-2% can progress to stomach cancer.

“Antibiotic resistance in Vietnam is at a high level, making effective treatment difficult. In addition, the rate of H. pylori reinfection after treatment is also worrying. A 2005 study showed that, on average, after 11 months of treatment, the rate of H. pylori reinfection was 23.5%,” said Mr. Tu.

During the screening program, doctors also discovered 721 people with signs of fasting blood sugar disorders (15%), 963 people with abnormal blood pressure measurements were re-examined with an electrocardiogram (20%), 1,585 people with dyslipidemia (33%) and 111 people with uric acid disorders (0.2%).

According to Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Chairman of the Vietnam Young Physicians Association, health is not only a valuable asset of each individual but also the foundation for sustainable development of the whole community and society.

“In recent years, non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes or stomach diseases caused by H.Pylori bacteria have become a major burden for global health and Vietnam. Early detection and raising awareness of prevention of these diseases is extremely important,” said Mr. Duc.
