Researchers from Tufts University (USA) analyzed data of 46,000 people aged 20 and over, from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 - 2018, to find out how coffee drinking methods affect longevity.

Participants were asked to report on their diet.

Coffee consumption was classified by type (caffeinated or decaffeinated), sugar content.

The amount of sugar added to coffee is considered low if it is under 2.5g - about half a teaspoon of sugar for an 8-ounce iced coffee or a cup of hot coffee.

During a median follow-up of 9–11 years, there were a total of 7,074 deaths, including 1,089 deaths from cardiovascular disease.

Black coffee with no sugar or little sugar helps prolong life

The results found that coffee consumption - about 1 - 2 cups of caffeinated coffee per day - reduced all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality, and helped prolong life.

Specifically, drinking at least 1 cup of coffee a day reduces the risk of death from all causes by 16%; 2-3 cups of coffee reduces the risk by 17%, helping to prolong life.

However, drinking more than three drinks a day did not add any additional benefits to longevity, with a reduction of only 15%. At the same time, the effect of preventing death from cardiovascular disease was also reduced at this level.

Notably, only black coffee with no or little sugar provided the longevity benefit. Coffee with added sugar or saturated fat did not.

Coffee's bioactive compounds are responsible for its health benefits, but the results suggest that adding sugar and saturated fat may reduce the longevity benefits, explains lead study author Fang Fang Zhang, PhD, of the Neely Family School of Nutrition at Tufts University.

Co-author Dr Bingjie Zhou said: Very few studies have looked at how additives to a cup of coffee affect the longevity benefits of coffee. This is one of the first studies to examine exactly how much sugar is added to a cup of coffee. The results are consistent with the US Dietary Guidelines, which recommend limiting added sugars and saturated fats.

The health benefits of coffee consumption may be reduced when sugar and saturated fat are added, researchers concluded, according to The Journal of Nutrition .
