Supermarket chain Sam's Club is facing an investigation after a customer said he found a human tooth in a mooncake purchased from one of the chain's stores in China.

A woman shared a video on social media platform Douyin showing a tooth in a 30 yuan (US$4.80) meat-filled mooncake purchased in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, the South China Morning Post reported today, September 15.

The woman said the tooth did not belong to any family member and reported the incident to the police.

An employee at a Sam's Club in Changzhou said the company is investigating the incident.

Hongxing News quoted the manufacturer as saying that "there can't be teeth mixed in with the meat filling." A spokesman surnamed Liu explained that all the meat is ground and X-rayed to detect bone fragments.

Such incidents have not occurred in more than a decade, the spokesman added.

The manufacturer has provided surveillance footage to Sam's Club and the Changzhou market regulator for review.

According to the South China Morning Post , this is not the first case of food safety concerns at Sam's Club supermarkets in mainland China.

In 2022, a woman in Fujian province said her uncle found three false teeth in Swiss bread purchased from the supermarket chain, causing his teeth to break while eating. The supermarket said it would investigate, but no results were shared.

Sam's Club, an American brand, has 49 branches in mainland China. Customers must buy a membership card for a minimum of 260 yuan a year. As of last year, the brand had more than 5 million members.
