At 8:00 a.m. on June 28 (Vietnam time), incumbent US President Joe Biden (Democratic Party) had a 90-minute live debate with former President Donald Trump (Republican Party).
This event is considered “unique” ever, as it was conducted very early and both have not been officially chosen as candidates to represent their parties in the US presidential election later this year. However, both Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump have received enough delegates to win their respective nominations since mid-March.
This is also the first time that a sitting and former president will face off in person in the United States. And for the first time since 1976, there will be no audience in the studio. The candidates will not make opening statements, but will have two minutes to end. The two moderators will ask the candidates questions, and each will have two minutes to answer.
Each candidate will then have 1 minute to comment on their answer, followed by 1 minute to respond to their opponent’s comments. The candidates’ microphones will be muted and will only be turned on when it is their turn to speak. The candidates will not be allowed to bring any notes or props to the debate stage. Instead, they will be provided with paper, pens, and water…
The first debate between the two veteran politicians took place in a context where most recent polls showed Mr. Trump maintaining an advantage, while President Biden's approval rating was low. However, after Mr. Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records by a New York court, American public opinion in general has slightly shifted in favor of President Biden. The second debate is scheduled to take place on September 10.
The live debate is often considered the climax of the election campaign, attracting the attention of tens of millions of viewers (more than 73 million watched the first debate between the two politicians in 2020). The US media commented that this first debate was a "test" for the physical and mental health of Mr. Biden (81 years old) and Mr. Trump (78 years old) - the oldest candidates ever to run for president.
