“Make in Vietnam” animation to the world

For the first time, the country's animation cinema welcomed four 100% "made in Vietnam" animation projects to theaters in April, including: "Blank Blank", "Wolfoo and the Race of the Three Realms", "Trang Quynh Nhi: The Legend of the Taurus" and "Zombie with Lazy Eyes". These are also representatives of Vietnamese cinema attending the Annecy International Animated Film Festival - the world's largest animated film festival taking place in France, June 2025.

Not only bringing a diverse perspective when 4 projects are produced from different technologies: 3D Animation, 2D Frame-by-Frame, to Stopmotion production technology, the animated film projects also make a strong impression because of the young Vietnamese production team with quality not inferior to international producers.

“Hollywood is considering Vietnam as the land of animation, because all Hollywood and European animated films released in Vietnam have achieved very good sales. It would be a pity if our market is recognized by Hollywood but we lose the opportunity at home,” said Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, Content Director of CJ CGV Vietnam, at the “Investment and Commercialization of Animation” Seminar recently held in Vietnam. Mr. Hai’s concerns are both encouragement for producers and a challenge for young animators.

Originating in 1959 amid the war, the first drawings of Vietnamese animation were born with the work "Deserves the Fox", up to now, Vietnamese animation has gone through 66 years, preserved, nurtured and created a solid foundation by previous generations of artists. In particular, 2018 marked an important milestone when Vietnamese animation first launched the animation project "Wolfoo and the Mysterious Island" and then, in 2023, launched the 450-episode 3D animation "Trang Quynh in his silly days" produced by domestic producers. With a harmonious combination of tradition and modernity, along with funny drawings and light educational content, Vietnamese animation has been brought to domestic and international audiences.

Created and produced by a Vietnamese team, the Wolfoo animation project with about 2,700 episodes broadcast on the YouTube platform is an impressive highlight in the creative ecosystem of Sconnect Vietnam Technology and Service Investment Company Limited. Along with the international English version, the Wolfoo series is now available in 17 languages such as Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, etc. Each episode, about 3 minutes long, is a journey of discovery and learning new things for the wolf Wolfoo, thereby helping children practice the necessary qualities and skills: Courage, gratitude, compassion, empathy, humility, integrity, perseverance, creativity, curiosity, teamwork spirit, ability to control emotions and communication. Mr. Ta Manh Hoang, founder and CEO of Sconnect, said that when expanding production, one of the biggest difficulties is the shortage of high-quality human resources. To meet the human resources for its development needs and contribute to the overall development of the market, Sconnect launched the Sconnect International Animation Training Academy (Sconnect Academy, now SAMA) to train animation production. After more than 3 years of operation, SAMA has provided more than 3,000 human resources for the labor market and the rate of graduates finding jobs immediately is 100%. Currently, SAMA is training 7 majors in animation production and game design.

Mr. Mickael Marin, representative of the Organizing Committee of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, affirmed that the participation of Vietnamese animated films at the festival is the opening activity in the cooperation program between the French Embassy in Vietnam and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The screening and promotion events at the festival will be a good opportunity for Vietnam to promote not only its products but also the skills of domestic animation workers, thereby expanding opportunities for Vietnamese animation units to integrate into the world.
