(Dan Tri) - Paul Pogba is about to return to the field after being banned for 18 months for illegal doping. The French player may even be able to play in the Champions League next season.

According to ESPN, Pogba has agreed to join Monaco on a two-year contract. Previously, the 1993-born player had rejected lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia to stay and play in France.

Le Parisien newspaper stressed that the former Man Utd and Juventus star had to make significant financial sacrifices to play for Monaco. In return, the 32-year-old player will continue to play at the highest level after a long time away from football.

Notably, Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 last season. That means the club will participate in the Champions League next season. Perhaps, that is the reason why the Principality team can convince Pogba.

Pogba was handed a four-year ban in February 2024 after testing positive for the banned substance DHEA. In October, the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the French midfielder's ban to 18 months after an appeal.

Pogba's ban expired in March. Speaking to ESPN, the French midfielder admitted that he considered retiring after being banned for four years: "Yes, I thought about retiring many times after being banned for four years.

I asked myself what I would do? After 4 years of not playing or training, would any club want to own me? Would I be healthy enough to compete at the top? Many questions appeared in my mind.

But on the other hand, I am a person of faith and optimism. I know I did not do anything wrong on purpose, so fortunately my sentence was reduced.”

Pogba last appeared on the pitch in September 2023 for Juventus. Meanwhile, the last time this midfielder played a full 90 minutes was more than 3 years ago when he played for Man Utd.
