Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said the time may come when Moscow will need to deploy nuclear missiles in response to Western actions.
“I confirm – if President Vladimir Putin, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, if our military declares that we need special ammunition for certain aircraft carriers, then such weapons will be deployed. But this decision must be made based on a combination of factors. I do not exclude that the time will come when it will be necessary,” TASS news agency quoted Mr. Ryabkov as saying on Rossiya 1 TV channel on August 4.
Previously, according to a joint press release from Washington and Berlin, the US will begin deploying long-range firepower from the Multi-Domain Task Force in Germany in 2026, including SM-6 air defense missiles with a range of up to 460km and Tomahawk cruise missiles, which are said to be able to attack targets more than 2,500km away.
The White House said the “hypersonic weapon under development” would also be based in Germany and would have “significantly longer ranges than current land-based weapons in Europe.”
German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer said the plan to deploy the weapons was aimed at deterring the use of Russian weapons against Germany or other targets, and was part of efforts to maintain a strategic balance in Europe, which has seen rising tensions between Russia and the West.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on July 28 that if US long-range missiles appear in Germany, Russia will no longer abide by the unilateral moratorium on the deployment of short- and medium-range strike weapons, including the strengthening of the country's naval coastal forces. He hinted that Russia could restore such weapons, especially after the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty was suspended in 2019.
