Chinese President Xi Jinping during a reception for US Secretary of State Antony Blinken

Biden's assessment came after Blinken concluded talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Blinken had earlier met with Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China, and Foreign Minister Qin Gang.

For his part, the Chinese president also spoke about progress in the negotiations. CCTV quoted Xi as saying that the two sides agreed to abide by the common understandings he and President Biden reached in Bali, Indonesia, in November 2022. Xi called for maintaining relations with the US, saying the world needed this to ensure overall stability.

However, CNBC said that geopolitical tensions between the two countries could remain high after the meeting. CNN commented that an important issue that the talks could not resolve was the restoration of communication between the two countries' militaries, which had been frozen after a series of recent incidents, raising concerns that tensions could lead to conflict.

According to the South China Morning Post , while Mr. Blinken's visit focused on stabilizing relations to prevent conflicts, Chinese Premier Li Qiang's trip to Europe at the same time focused on promoting economic relations and bilateral cooperation on the continent.

DW reported that after meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on June 19, Mr. Li met with business representatives of German companies and called for a correct assessment of "risks." According to the Chinese Prime Minister, "risk prevention" and "cooperation" are not two opposites. He said that refusing to cooperate is the biggest risk, while not being able to develop is the most important security issue. In response to Mr. Li's statement, German business representatives are said to have agreed not to choose to separate from China to manage risks, according to Xinhua.
