That is the case of Mrs. NTQ (89 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City). She is also the oldest patient among nearly 3,000 robotic surgeries performed at Binh Dan Hospital since the implementation of robotic surgery for adults from the end of 2016 until now.
Previously, when he discovered signs of black stools and dull pain in the right side, Mr. Q. was taken by his family to a medical facility in Ho Chi Minh City for examination.
Through CT scan, it was discovered that she had a tumor in her right colon and many surrounding lymph nodes. The biopsy results after endoscopy confirmed that this was cancer. The disease caused her to have poor appetite, anemia, and her body to become increasingly emaciated and lose weight.
He was taken to Binh Dan Hospital for examination, diagnosis and robotic surgery to treat colon cancer. At that time, Mr. Q. weighed only 34 kg and could not walk on his own. His relatives were worried that he could not endure the major surgery.
However, after being consulted and carefully considered, Mr. Q. still decided to choose surgery in the hope of having a better quality of life, being able to take care of himself and not being a burden to his children.
Sharing about the case of Mrs. NTQ, Dr. Nguyen Phu Huu - Deputy Head of the Department of Gastroenterology - said that performing surgery on an 89-year-old patient with stage 3 cancer and severe malnutrition was a big challenge. Doctors had an interdisciplinary consultation and prepared very carefully to be able to perform the surgery.
And joy came to the 89-year-old woman when the 120-minute surgery of Mrs. Q. was successful. The tumor was completely removed, the lymph nodes were quickly removed and most importantly, the healthy tissue in the patient's abdomen was preserved.
After surgery, Mr. Q. was cared for in the Intensive Care Unit of the Department of Gastroenterology and began eating again on the 3rd postoperative day. The abdominal ultrasound results on the 7th postoperative day showed that the patient's abdomen was clean, had no fluid, and was eating well, with no more abdominal pain.
