Although it is the peak summer season, many stages, theaters, and art units in Ho Chi Minh City are in a state of disrepair and operating at a low level.

Normally, Idecaf Drama Theater will perform 5-6 plays per week, however, at present, the unit has reduced it to only 1-2 plays.

Mr. Tram Thanh Thao, Ticket Sales Manager at Idecaf Drama Theater, said that by the end of June, the program Once Upon a Time had performed 34 times. According to the plan, there will be 8 shows this July. After that, the theater will review the situation to decide on the performances for next August. This program will probably end in August and not last until September like every year.

According to Mr. Tram Thanh Thao, the number of audiences this year decreased compared to last year, especially the weekend show only reached about 400-500 tickets.

Similarly, artist Viet Huong of Truong Hung Minh Stage said that the number of audiences coming to see the play Me Coc Phieu Luu Ky has decreased compared to last year. Currently, the play has performed 20 times, this July and next August, the female artist is busy with film projects so it is difficult to schedule many performances. Overall, the play may not be as successful with 60 performances as last year's Fairy Tale.

According to People's Artist Hong Van, this is a difficult time for many theaters. Accordingly, she only focuses on arranging all horror plays for this occasion because these are the strengths of Hong Van Drama Theater.

Meanwhile, Hoang Thai Thanh Drama Theater has stopped performing plays during the summer to focus on making new plays in time for the September 2nd holiday and the following exciting seasons.

Faced with the current situation of low audience numbers, many leaders and managers of stages and theaters believe that because the economy has not fully recovered, audiences are hesitant to buy tickets. However, they are still persistent and believe that we should not rely too much on old audiences but need to be bold and persistent in building and finding new audiences for theaters. Therefore, art units also launch plays, invest in new ways of expression to enhance the experience for viewers.

The Small Stage Theater has increased performances of children's plays such as Wildlife Rescue Station and offers discounted tickets for students when they come to watch plays here.

People's Artist My Uyen, Director of the Small Stage Drama Theater, said that the play with its novel staging combined with activities such as animal circus, magic, dancing, etc. is also a way to create novelty for young audiences.

At Quoc Thao Drama Theater, this summer, the unit has moved to a larger location to accommodate grand performances. According to artist Quoc Thao, compared to last year, the number of visitors to the theater has not changed much, the main audience is children and parents, and the frequency of return visits is also quite high.

To serve the audience throughout the summer months, the theater also increased the number of performances in both main plays, Colorful Island and Magical Land . In addition, the theater also organizes free performances for children in difficult circumstances and special performances for children in shelters and charity centers.

Artist Quoc Thao shared: “Summer is a special time, so almost all performing arts units try their best to serve children before the new school year. In addition, this is also an opportunity for children to access traditional art and entertainment from an early age.”
