Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Singapore in the first week of September, along with a visit to Thailand to attend the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, scheduled for September 4.

The last time Mr. Modi visited the lion island was a bilateral visit in 2018 and then attended the 13th East Asia Summit. During that visit, he was the first Indian Prime Minister to attend and speak at the Shangri La Dialogue, according to Wion .

The India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR), also known as the 3+3 dialogue, is scheduled to take place on August 25. This will be the second meeting between the foreign , finance and commerce ministers of the two countries. Several Indian ministers are likely to attend this important meeting and sign agreements on a number of areas, from food safety to digitalisation and semiconductors.

The first meeting took place in New Delhi in September 2022. At that time, the then Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong attended and visited Gujarat. Lawrence Wong took office as the 4th Prime Minister of Singapore earlier this year.

India and Singapore have established an ISMR mechanism to enhance cooperation in existing areas and identify opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration in new and emerging areas, such as digital connectivity, fintech, green economy, green hydrogen, skill development and food production.

According to Wion, the two countries have convergence on a range of international issues. India invited Singapore as a guest country during its G20 presidency last year. Singapore is India’s largest trading partner in ASEAN and a leading source of FDI.

The Indian community accounts for about 9.1% (about 350,000) of the total 3.9 million foreigners granted permanent residency in Singapore.
