According to the Ministry of Transport, in the road network planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan - Cao Bang expressway has a length of about 227km.

In particular, the Ministry of Transport has invested and put into operation the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen section, 66km long, with 4 lanes (planned for 6 lanes); the Thai Nguyen - Cho Moi section, 40km long, with 2 lanes (planned for 4 lanes).

The Ministry is also preparing to start construction on the 28km Cho Moi - Bac Kan section, with a scale of 4 lanes (planned for 4 lanes).

For the remaining section from Bac Kan to Cao Bang, the Prime Minister has assigned localities to carry out investment preparation work.

Agree with voters on the need to invest, upgrade, and expand the Hanoi - Thai Nguyen section (Tan Lap intersection) according to the planning scale to meet transportation needs. However, according to the Ministry of Transport, due to resource difficulties, it has not been possible to allocate capital to invest in upgrading this expressway section in the 2021 - 2025 period.

"In the coming time, the Ministry will continue to closely coordinate with ministries, branches and localities to seek and mobilize legal capital sources to soon deploy investment and upgrade this expressway section according to the plan," the document stated.

The Hanoi - Thai Nguyen Expressway was started in November 2009, completed and opened to traffic in January 2014 with a scale of 4 lanes, designed speed of 100km/h. The project has a total investment of more than 10,000 billion VND from ODA loans and domestic counterpart capital.
