Dengue fever rages in the Americas

Báo Sài Gòn Giải phóngBáo Sài Gòn Giải phóng20/04/2024

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said that the number of dengue fever infections in the Americas increased by nearly 50% in the past 3 weeks, reaching 5.2 million cases since the beginning of 2024, including more than 1,800 deaths.

PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa stressed that dengue fever continues to spread strongly in South America, especially in Brazil and Argentina. However, the PAHO chief said that the recent drop in temperatures in South American countries will help stabilize dengue infection in the region.

On the other hand, with countries in the Northern Hemisphere about to enter summer, PAHO noted that hot weather creates conditions for more mosquito breeding, in a context where vaccination programs are still not effective in combating dengue outbreaks.
