Western support for Ukraine is fragile because of political instability.

(CLO) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement of his resignation marks a major political change for one of Ukraine's major allies.

While the change does not immediately affect Canada’s position, it does undermine the personal relationship between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Mr. Trudeau. In his farewell speech, Mr. Trudeau asserted that Canada needed a new choice and that he was not the best candidate for the upcoming election.

The move comes shortly after Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer resigned after failing to form a coalition government without the far-right Freedom Party (FPO). The party, known for its opposition to aid to Ukraine and its proposal to lift sanctions on Russia, won the most votes in recent elections and will play a key role in the new government .

In Germany, the second-largest provider of military aid to Ukraine, political instability has also increased following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government.

The upcoming election could reshape Berlin’s aid policy toward Kiev, especially given the rise of the far-right AfD party, which opposes support for Ukraine. In addition, internal disagreements over the aid budget have raised doubts about Germany’s long-term commitment.

These political changes come as the United States, under President-elect Donald Trump, is likely to reduce military aid to Ukraine, forcing European allies to shoulder much of the responsibility.

Meanwhile, in France, the political situation is also unstable as President Emmanuel Macron faces opposition from populist parties, which are gaining more support, making it more difficult to maintain aid to Kiev.

With the rise of populist parties in Europe, countries like Germany and France may face greater pressure to maintain unconditional support for Ukraine, analysts say.

Some experts warn that, without a ceasefire, France and Germany could pressure Ukraine to accept peace plans that favour Russia.
