Many people have the habit of exercising early in the morning on an empty stomach.

However, exercising early in the morning on an empty stomach can cause the following consequences:

Muscular effects

When exercising at moderate intensity on an empty stomach, meaning no carbs are provided, the body will first turn to fat as a fuel source.

However, if you exercise at a high intensity for 60 minutes or more, your body may have to turn to muscle, breaking it down into amino acids that can be synthesized into sugar for fuel, warns Dr. Leslie Bonci, a sports nutritionist at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). That means this type of exercise can cause you to lose muscle, according to Live Strong .

High-intensity exercise early in the morning on an empty stomach forces the body to break down muscle to fuel the workout, says Bonci.

According to Dr. Kien Vuu, Associate Professor of Health Sciences at the University of Los Angeles (USA), that is why the type of exercise performed early in the morning on an empty stomach is important.

Marie Spano, a sports nutritionist in the US, advises: If you want to build muscle and exercise on an empty stomach, you need to consume enough protein and calories immediately after exercise.

May cause disease

Dr. Vuu advises against high-intensity workouts on an empty stomach in the morning because it can put stress on the body. Too much stress at any one time or over a long period of time can lead to health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure, according to Live Strong .

If you feel fine after an intense workout on an empty stomach, you can continue. But if you start to feel unwell or are unable to recover properly, reduce the intensity of your workout, because everyone's body is different.

High-intensity exercise on an empty stomach can affect muscles

Dizziness, fainting

If you exercise on an empty stomach and start to feel dizzy or lethargic, stop exercising and eat something to restore your blood sugar.

Sean Ruff, nutrition coach and exercise physiologist, founder of Targeted Nutrition & Training Solutions LLC (USA), warns: Doing cardio on an empty stomach can cause dizziness, especially in those who are new to exercise or are not used to it.

People with eating disorders, diabetes or hypoglycemia, or over age 65 should consult their doctor before exercising, says Spano.

Working out on an empty stomach often depletes glycogen and therefore lowers blood sugar levels. Hypoglycemia can lead to a risk of hypoglycemic shock, which can cause dizziness, slurred speech, blurred vision, and shakiness, says Ruff.

Warning

Dr. Angela Fitch, from Massachusetts General Hospital (USA), said that people with diabetes or those taking insulin should not exercise on an empty stomach without consulting a doctor, according to Live Strong .
