According to Reuters news agency, a group calling itself the Independent Publishers Alliance has filed an antitrust lawsuit with the European Commission (EC), targeting the AI Overviews feature of technology corporation Google.
The lawsuit alleges that Google misuses web content for its AI Overviews feature in the Google Search toolbar, causing significant harm to publishers, including news publishers, in terms of traffic, readership, and revenue.
The lawsuit also argues that publishers have no choice but to allow their content to be used in AI summaries unless they agree to disappear from Google's search results entirely.
It’s been more than a year since Google began incorporating AI-generated summaries at the top of some search results. Despite some initial egregious misinformation, the feature has continued to expand, reportedly causing a major traffic loss for news publishers.
Responding to Reuters, Google said that new AI experiences in Search allow users to ask more questions, thereby creating new opportunities for content and businesses to be discovered .
The group also argues that claims of traffic declines are often based on incomplete data, and that sites can gain or lose traffic for a variety of reasons.
Previously, a jury in San Jose, California, USA, just issued a verdict forcing Google to pay more than 314.6 million USD in compensation to smartphone users using the Android operating system in this state, after Google was discovered to have illegally used customers' mobile data.
According to the ruling, Alphabet Inc. - Google's parent company - violated users' privacy by collecting and transmitting information from devices even when they were inactive, wasting users' mobile data without consent./.
