The communications breakdown has isolated Gaza’s 2.3 million people from each other and the outside world , exacerbating a humanitarian crisis in southern Gaza. Meanwhile, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned of “the possibility of immediate famine” in Gaza as food supplies have been disrupted under Israeli control and aid is too little.
“With winter fast approaching, shelters unsafe, overcrowded and lacking clean water, people are facing an imminent risk of starvation,” said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.
The fuel shortage has knocked out internet and phone services in Palestine and will not be able to restart unless Israel allows fuel supplies, raising the risk of a prolonged communications blackout, following three previous outages, said Palnet, the main Palestinian telecommunications provider.
Previous power outages have left Palestinians vulnerable, unable to call ambulances or contact family members to ensure they are alive.
Aid workers say Israel's blockade of Gaza will devastate humanitarian and hospital services in the territory. Some Palestinians try to stay in touch using satellite phones or SIM cards connected to Israeli or Egyptian networks.
According to Palestinian health authorities, more than 11,470 Palestinians were killed, two-thirds of them women and minors. Another 2,700 people are reported missing, most likely buried under the rubble.
