The USS New Jersey, which displaces 7,000 tons and is more than 106 meters long, is the first Virginia-class submarine specifically designed for a mixed crew, according to the US Department of Defense .

Gaucher added that in the future, all future nuclear-powered attack submarines and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines will also be designed with gender-neutral amenities from the start.
According to the Navy Times in 2023, the US Navy announced plans to increase the number of submarines with mixed crews from 30 to 40.
Lieutenant Commanders Andrea Howard and Emma McCarthy, among a growing number of women joining the submarine fleet, wrote in an October 2023 article for the U.S. Naval Institute about the adjustments needed to help women integrate into submarines that were originally designed for all-male crews.
