Thai police said the accident happened in the early morning of December 5. Photos posted on local media showed the front of the bus broken in half due to the strong impact.

State-owned Transport Company said all injured were being treated in hospital and the company was investigating the cause of the accident.

Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation, preliminary investigations indicate that the bus driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He is currently seriously injured, police said.

According to the World Health Organization, Thailand has one of the highest road death rates in the world, with about 20,000 people killed in traffic accidents each year.

Last July, four people were killed and 34 others injured when a bus carrying them veered off a mountain road in Phu Sing district in northeastern Thailand.
