What should pregnant women pay attention to during Tet holiday?

Báo Nhân dânBáo Nhân dân31/01/2025

NDO - Many pregnant women take advantage of the Tet holidays to eat more because they think they have to eat for two people.

Specialist Doctor I Dinh Tran Ngoc Mai, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City said that during Tet, people will change their daily routine, which will affect the biological clock of pregnant women to some extent. Therefore, pregnant women should try to maintain their daily routine, eat on time, eat on time, and eat scientifically to help their babies develop safely and healthily.

Pregnant women need to eat cooked food and drink boiled water, ensuring adequate nutrition and variety of foods.

"Many pregnant women take advantage of the Tet holidays to eat more because they think they have to eat for two people. In fact, the fetus only absorbs the nutrients needed for development. Eating more than necessary will cause other side effects such as obesity, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes...", Dr. Mai warned.

During this time, pregnant women absolutely must not drink alcohol and alcoholic beverages. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is very dangerous: increased risk of miscarriage, fetal malformations, poor development, and negative effects on the nervous system.

Dishes made from raw fish and meat: nem chua, tre, blood pudding, fish salads with undercooked meat, sushi with raw fish... should also be avoided because pregnant women's immune systems are often weaker than normal people, so they are susceptible to infections that cause diarrhea.

Pickled foods such as green papaya, onions, etc. should also be limited if pregnant women often have stomach aches and frequent digestive disorders.

Limit processed foods and greasy dishes, such as sausages, braised meat, pork head cheese, banh chung, etc., because they can increase morning sickness, vomiting, or cause indigestion.

Pregnant women should limit sweets, dried fruits, fruit jams, etc. Candies and jams sold of unknown origin often pose food safety risks.

Canned, sugary, or carbonated drinks: These drinks contain a lot of simple sugars and can increase blood sugar. Instead, pregnant women should drink plenty of water.

To ensure nutrition during Tet, pregnant women need to ensure 3 main meals on time and with high nutritional value including many food groups (starch, protein and vegetables); drink plenty of filtered water and limit sugary drinks; add fresh fruit to provide many vitamins and minerals.

Dried seeds such as pumpkin seeds, walnuts, chestnuts, melon seeds, etc. are rich in essential fatty acids and vegetable protein. However, avoid colored seeds or seeds of unknown origin. Pregnant women should only use their hands or tools to open the seeds, not bite them with their mouths.
