Vietnamese coffee market share in Belgium increased to 20.08%

Coffee export prices increased impressively, reaching more than 3,000 USD/ton. Coffee prices today, March 19, 2024: Domestic coffee prices remain stable.

The Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) cited data calculated from Eurostat, saying that in 2023, Belgium imported 288.51 thousand tons of coffee from non-EU markets, worth nearly 1.12 billion EUR (equivalent to 1.22 billion USD), down 26.9% in volume and 31% in value compared to 2022.

In 2023, the average import price of Belgian coffee from the non-EU market will reach 3,876 EUR/ton, down 5.6% compared to 2022.

Of which, the average import price of Belgian coffee from most non-EU markets decreased; the decrease from Honduras was 14.4%, down to 5,172 EUR/ton; from Vietnam decreased by 2.7%, down to 2,391 EUR/ton.

Regarding the supply structure, in 2023, Belgium will import coffee mainly from sources outside the EU, including: Brazil, Vietnam, Honduras, Colombia, Peru...

Of which, Belgium imported 78.99 thousand tons of coffee from Brazil in 2023, worth 273.36 million EUR (equivalent to 299.07 million USD), down 40.8% in volume and 46.7% in value compared to 2022.

Brazil's coffee share in Belgium's total imports from the non-EU market will decrease from 33.8% in 2022 to 27.38% in 2023. In 2023, Belgium imported 57.94 thousand tons of coffee from Vietnam, worth 138.51 million EUR (equivalent to 151.54 million USD), down 14.3% in volume and 16.6% in value compared to 2022.

Vietnam's coffee market share in Belgium's total imports from the non-EU market will increase from 17.13% in 2022 to 20.08% in 2023.

Similarly, in 2023, Belgium will reduce coffee imports from other non-bloc markets such as Honduras and Colombia, however, the rate of decrease will be lower than the decrease from Peru, Brazil or Vietnam.

According to data from the General Department of Customs, in the first two months of 2024, Vietnam exported approximately 398.82 thousand tons of coffee, worth 1.25 billion USD, up 16.4% in volume and 68.0% in value over the same period in 2023. The average export price of Vietnam's coffee in the first two months of 2024 reached 3,146 USD/ton, up 44.5% over the same period in 2023.

In February 2024, Vietnam's coffee exports to many traditional markets decreased compared to February 2023, except for Italy, Spain, Indonesia, and the Netherlands. In general, in the first two months of 2024, our country's coffee exports to most traditional markets increased compared to the same period in 2023, except for Belgium. Notably, our country's coffee exports to the Indonesian market recorded a triple-digit growth rate in February and the first two months of 2024.
