The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority (DGCA Turkey) has recently issued a regulation imposing administrative penalties on passengers who unbuckle their seat belts, stand up or retrieve their luggage while the 'fasten seat belt' sign is still on - a common practice on many flights. This regulation officially took effect in May.
According to local media, the fine can be as high as 2,603 Lira, equivalent to about 67 USD, for passengers who are “in a hurry” to get off the plane early by unfastening their seat belts, taking their carry-on luggage and heading towards the gate without permission. Even when the signal light is off, if passengers still push their way to the front when the seats in front are not ready, they can still be punished according to regulations.
The new regulation was introduced after receiving numerous complaints from passengers and on-site inspections, which showed widespread violations, despite international safety regulations that prohibit standing up while the plane is taxiing to the terminal, DGCA Turkey said.
“Do not stand or move in the aisle until it is your turn to disembark,” is a mandatory announcement that airlines in Türkiye must make after landing. Failure to do so could result in fines.
Turkish media reported that the country's largest airline, Turkish Airlines, has disseminated this regulation to all flight attendants and flight attendants to ensure strict implementation.
Although aviation laws in many countries prohibit passengers from unbuckling their seatbelts and standing up early, punishments are not common. With this tough move, Türkiye hopes to raise passenger awareness and ensure safety throughout the journey, even after the plane has landed.
