Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade: Need to clearly assess the impact if electricity prices are adjusted every two months

This afternoon (January 7, 2025), the Ministry of Industry and Trade held a regular press conference for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Regarding the proposal to adjust electricity prices every two months that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is seeking opinions on, Mr. Nguyen The Huu - Deputy Director of the Electricity Regulatory Authority said that the regulation on adjusting average retail electricity prices has existed before.

According to Decision 05/2024/QD-TTg issued by the Prime Minister regulating the mechanism for adjusting average retail electricity prices, the cycle for adjusting average retail electricity prices is reduced from 6 months to 3 months.

Currently, the Electricity Regulatory Authority is being assigned by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to develop this mechanism. The Authority proposes a plan to adjust prices every two months. “The draft is still seeking comments from units, especially those that are heavily impacted.

After collecting comments, the Department will synthesize a report to the Ministry's leaders. The roadmap of the draft Decree will take effect with the revised Electricity Law just passed by the National Assembly , that is, from February 1, 2025."

Speaking further about this proposal, Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that the proposal to change the average retail electricity price adjustment cycle is a market-based story.

“There will be many more contents that need further research. I suggest that the Electricity Regulatory Authority must conduct research and clearly evaluate the impact of adjusting retail prices every 2 months, or every 3 months, to compare and find the most reasonable direction,” Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan emphasized.
