Thus, Mr. Olaf Scholz is once again the SPD's candidate for Chancellor in the early election scheduled for February 23, 2025.

According to DW media, Mr. Scholz's nomination came after Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, considered Germany's most popular politician , informed the SPD leadership that he would not run to become the party's candidate for chancellor.

In a statement, Mr. Pistorius declared this was a personal decision, and called on his colleagues to end internal disagreements regarding who would lead the SPD in the extraordinary election, called after the coalition government collapsed on November 6.

Mr Pistorius also praised Mr Scholz for steering a troubled coalition through what he described as perhaps the biggest crisis in recent decades.

SPD chairman Lars Klingbeil and SPD co-chair Saskia Esken confirmed the nomination decision. In a statement, Saskia Esken also welcomed Pistorius' decision to withdraw, saying it showed great solidarity with the SPD and Chancellor Scholz.

Currently, Mr. Olaf Scholz and the SPD party are facing many challenges as it is still impossible to predict what the role of the SPD will be in the upcoming new government.

Recent polls show that the center-left party has only 14-16% of the vote, far behind the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, which has 22-24% of the vote, and lower than the far-right Alternative for Germany party with 18-19% of the vote.
