Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaks to the media in Berlin on January 3.

The Hill newspaper on January 5 quoted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sharing his approach after billionaire Elon Musk recently had many exchanges of words with German politicians .

"There are a lot of people on social media who want to attract attention with quick slogans," Scholz said in an interview with Stern magazine, calling on German politicians to ignore sarcastic, provocative content intended to provoke a reaction.

"As Social Democrats (SPD), we are used to having wealthy media entrepreneurs who do not appreciate Social Democratic politics - and do not hide their views," the leader stressed.

The statement came after German officials had a row with Mr. Musk, the billionaire owner of SpaceX, Tesla and social network X, and a close ally of US President-elect Donald Trump. Mr. Musk was chosen by Mr. Trump to lead the Government Efficiency Board in the coming time.

Mr Musk has poked fun at the German leader and predicted that he will “lose” the parliamentary elections on February 23.

Last month, Mr. Musk also wrote an editorial in the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag expressing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The article argued that the German economy was being harmed by bureaucracy and excessive government intervention. He also supported the AfD’s immigration proposals.

Following the post, the German government accused Mr Musk of interfering in Germany's upcoming elections, and tried to downplay the tech tycoon's efforts to drum up more support for the AfD.

In his New Year's address, Chancellor Scholz also said that "in our debates, one can sometimes be forgiven for thinking that the more extreme an opinion is, the more attention it attracts".

Some German politicians have also criticized Musk for his support of the AfD. On December 30, 2024, SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil accused Musk of “wanting Germany to weaken and fall into chaos.” Similarly, German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, a member of the SPD, called Musk’s intervention “undignified and problematic.”
