The Institute of Fundamental Biology, Chemistry and Medicine (ICBFM) of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences announced the completion of the first phase of testing of the cancer drug.
“Phase 1 of clinical trials of Russia’s first anti-cancer drug has been successful. The drug is based on an oncolytic virus – a virus designed to find and destroy cancer cells. The trials not only demonstrated the drug’s safety, but also showed its effectiveness in stopping the growth of tumors,” ICBFM said in a statement on October 23.
According to RIA news agency, the first stage in the cancer drug testing process revolves around assessing the drug's safety, patient tolerance and pharmacokinetic parameters.
Doctors will inject the drug into the patient, then consider the body's reactions to adjust the dosage for repeat injections.
In the next stage, the patient is given up to four injections of cancer drugs within a week.
“A number of patients with terminal cancer have participated in the drug trial and we have recorded positive progress. After taking the drug, the tumors of 55% of patients have decreased and the treatment process is also stable.
“From the data obtained, we can confirm that the drug is effective and we can move on to the second phase of testing,” said Vladimir Richter, head of the ICBFM of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Russian medical experts have begun clinical trials of this drug since 2022.
Earlier in October, Russia conducted clinical trials of a cancer vaccine on patients with malignant lung cancer and small cell lung cancer.
